(JUBA) – The Chinese Embassy in South Sudan has awarded scholarships to 48 students at the University of Juba. The announcement was made on December 18, 2025.
The Chinese Ambassador Scholarship covers one year of tuition at the leading public university, helping students who face financial difficulties due to ongoing economic challenges in South Sudan. These challenges are the result of years of conflict since 2013.
Vice Chancellor Robert Mayom Deng said the scholarships are timely and will help students focus on their studies without worrying about tuition payments.
He praised the Chinese Embassy for its continued support of the university, including the creation of an electronic learning centre, donations of books and computers, and the construction of a computer learning centre.
Sylvester Pio John Faki, a sixth-year medical student who received a scholarship, said the support will ease the financial pressure on students’ families, allowing them to concentrate fully on their academic work.
“The scholarship is a great opportunity for us because most of us are facing financial challenges. It reduces the burden and helps us focus on studies and other activities,” he said.
Chinese Ambassador Ma Qiang said the scholarships contribute to South Sudan’s educational, cultural and scientific development.
“They support the country’s progress toward peace, stability, and prosperity,” he said.
The ambassador also noted the inauguration of the China Cultural Centre in Juba and a series of visits by faculty and students to China. In August, 13 Chinese scholars and experts visited South Sudan and were welcomed by the university community.
The Chinese Embassy in Juba stated the scholarship programme is part of broader efforts by China to strengthen educational and cultural ties with South Sudan, while helping students overcome financial obstacles caused by the country’s economic difficulties.
