(JUBA COUNTY) – The construction of a new maternity ward in Mugwo is receiving support from the Central Equatoria State Ministry of Health as part of a wider effort to improve local medical services.
The initiative was the focus of a fundraising event on 4 July 2026, where the State Minister of Health, Joyce Bakwa Agole, pledged full assistance for the project.
The Minister announced a new campaign known as Revive Our PHCC, which aims to improve Primary Health Care Centres across Central Equatoria State. Minister Bakwa stated that the revitalization of these centres is essential to protecting the health of mothers and children.
The State Ministry of Health plans to deploy health workers to these facilities and continue to seek support from development partners to maintain the supply of essential medicines.
The Minister noted that strong mothers are necessary to build strong communities.
The event brought together government officials, community leaders, and the Chairperson of the Central Equatoria State Youth Union to show collective support for maternal and child healthcare.
This effort follows a meeting held on 1 July 2026, where the Ministry engaged with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan to improve health cooperation.
A delegation led by the Head of the UNMISS Field Office, Christopher Muchiri Murenga, met with Minister Bakwa to discuss ways to support health promotion and the provision of medicine within the state.
During the meeting, the Minister briefed the UNMISS team on planned community health projects and identified specific areas where external support is required.
Mr. Murenga confirmed the commitment of UNMISS to assist the Ministry in advancing these community health initiatives. The discussions ended with an agreement to strengthen ongoing cooperation to improve the delivery of health services across Central Equatoria State.
