(JUBA) – South Sudan and India have launched a new joint programme aimed at strengthening the country’s human resource and institutional capacity, marking a major step in ongoing cooperation between the two nations.
The initiative known as the UN-India Global Capacity Building Initiative was officially launched in Juba on 31 October 2025.
The event brought together senior South Sudanese government officials, diplomats and development partners. Among the attendees were Ambassador of India to South Sudan, the Minister of General Education and Instruction, Hon. Kuyok Abol Kuyok, and representatives from the Ministry of Labour and UNESCO.
According to the Embassy of India in Juba, the programme aims to enhance technical skills, promote education and build stronger public institutions through training, scholarships and knowledge sharing programmes. India’s contribution is part of its wider global engagement strategy focused on human development in partner countries.
Ambassador of India to South Sudan said the initiative reflects India’s long standing support for South Sudan’s growth.
“India has always believed in empowering people through knowledge and opportunity. Capacity building is key to unlocking South Sudan’s potential,” he said.
Minister Kuyok Abol Kuyok welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely investment in the nation’s youth and workforce.
“Education and skills development remain at the heart of our development vision. We value this partnership with India and the United Nations,” he noted.
India has been a consistent partner to South Sudan through the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme and other scholarship opportunities, which have supported South Sudanese students and professionals in fields such as medicine, engineering, agriculture and public administration.
The Embassy also expressed optimism that the collaboration will promote sustainable development by empowering South Sudanese youth to contribute meaningfully to their communities and the national economy.
