(JUBA) – The Embassy of India in Juba has held a medical awareness seminar to strengthen cooperation between South Sudan and India in healthcare. The event was organised with a visiting team from Medicover Hospitals in Hyderabad, India, as part of the Seva Pakhwada programme running from 15 September to 2 October.
The seminar was attended by Members of Parliament, senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other ministries, local doctors, hospital managers and journalists.
It focused on the advanced treatments available in India, including joint replacement, cancer care, organ transplants, and robotic surgery.
Dr Koteshwara Prasad Veeragandham, a senior orthopaedic consultant at Medicover, led the presentation. He explained that many South Sudanese citizens already travel to India for medical care. To make support easier, Medicover Hospitals announced plans to work with local hospitals to provide consultations within South Sudan.
The Ambassador of India encouraged the visiting team to combine modern medical expertise with values of hospitality, compassion and ethics. He also asked the doctors to make regular visits to Juba, so that South Sudanese patients can receive advice and follow-up care without always having to travel abroad.
India has become a leading destination for South Sudanese patients due to affordable costs, cultural similarities, simple visa processes, and good flight connections. For many, seeking treatment in India feels like finding “a home away from home.”
The partnership is expected to ease the financial and emotional burden on families, while opening new doors for collaboration between Indian and South Sudanese medical institutions.
