(JUBA) – The Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS) has welcomed a court decision granting journalists full access to cover the trial of the suspended First Vice President Dr Riek Machar and his co-accused.
The ruling issued on 23 September in Juba follows concerns that media freedom could be limited during the trial. The court directed that journalists should be allowed to report on all proceedings without restrictions.
In a press statement, UJOSS described the decision as a step forward for press freedom and transparency in South Sudan. The group said it was important for journalists to be able to inform the public about the ongoing trial, which has drawn widespread interest across the country.
UJOSS also appealed to other branches of government, particularly the Executive, to respect the decision of the judiciary. The association urged authorities to ensure journalists have unhindered access to cover the sessions.
“Journalists must be allowed to do their work freely,” said Oyet Patrick Charles, the UJOSS Chairperson. “This access will help the public follow events in the courtroom and strengthen confidence in the justice process.”
The trial of Dr Machar, who was suspended earlier this year, has become one of the most closely watched political and legal developments in South Sudan. Many citizens and political observers say the way the trial is handled will influence trust in both the courts and the government.
Media coverage of the case is expected to play a key role in keeping the public informed, especially in a country where access to accurate and reliable information often remains a challenge.
UJOSS stated that it will continue to advocate for journalists’ rights and called on security forces and government officials to avoid obstructing reporters during their work.
The decision to open up court coverage comes at a time when press freedom in South Sudan remains fragile, with journalists frequently facing threats and intimidation.
