(LAINYA, CENTRAL EQUATORIA) – The Commissioner of Lainya County, Honourable Robert Lasu John Morris, on Tuesday inaugurated the start of the Lainya County Youth Association election process.
The local political development marks a key step towards strengthening youth leadership and civic participation at the local level in Central Equatoria State.
According to organisers, the election process officially began with a constitutional review session on 22 July and is scheduled to continue on 23 July with the start of candidate campaigns and voting by delegates. Youth delegates from all five payams of Lainya County have gathered to participate in this significant local event.
The election process is being guided by the Central Equatoria State Youth Union and is under the close observation of the RSRTF consortium partners, who are providing support to ensure the process is transparent and inclusive.
During the official launch, Commissioner Morris emphasised the role of youth in South Sudan’s development, urging young people to actively participate in decision making and community building. He described the youth association as an essential institution for promoting unity, local development and leadership among young people in the county.
“This is more than just an election. It is a platform for youth empowerment,” said the commissioner. “The choices made today will determine the kind of leadership and future our youth will experience in Lainya County.”
The involvement of external observers and youth bodies reflects an emphasis on credibility, fairness and institutional support for young people’s democratic engagement. Officials from the state youth union assured participants of a smooth and inclusive process.
