(ADDIS ABABA / JUBA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit has arrived in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, to participate in the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.
Upon arrival, the President was received by Ethiopia’s Minister of Mining, Habtamu Tegegn, and South Sudan’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Baak Valentino Wol.
The high-level meeting, taking place at the African Union Headquarters, is convened under the theme:
“Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation System to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”
Leaders from across the continent are expected to deliberate on strategies to strengthen water security and accelerate the implementation of the AU’s Agenda 2063, the continental blueprint for inclusive and sustainable development.
Speaking to the press at Juba International Airport, the Chief Administrator in the Office of the President, Marik Nanga Marik, stated that President Kiir will also attend a meeting of the C5 Plus countries on the sidelines of the Summit.
The meeting will be chaired by Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa, and will focus on the current security and political situation in the South Sudan.
The C5 Plus engagement is expected to review the implementation of South Sudan’s Revitalized Peace Agreement and explore ways to consolidate progress through strengthened regional and international support mechanisms.
President Kiir is accompanied by several senior government officials, including Taban Deng Gai, Vice President for the Infrastructure Cluster.
