(Juba) – The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its support for peace in South Sudan, urging the government to commit to a ceasefire, release political detainees, and return to meaningful dialogue as the country faces rising tensions and uncertainty. Speaking during an interview with Radio Miraya, UK Special Envoy to Sudan and South Sudan Clare Staunton emphasized that the future of South Sudan depends on peace, inclusion, and opportunity.
Staunton’s remarks come at a time when the fragile peace process in South Sudan remains under pressure. The UK envoy used the platform to call directly on the Government of South Sudan to de-escalate tensions by halting hostilities immediately. She also stressed the urgent need for the release of all political prisoners and detainees as a step toward restoring public trust and creating space for inclusive dialogue.
The UK government has been a long-standing international partner in South Sudan’s peace efforts, providing diplomatic, humanitarian, and development support. Staunton reiterated that the UK remains committed to helping the people of South Sudan build a stable, inclusive, and prosperous country, but she made it clear that progress requires action and accountability from national leaders.
The British Embassy in Juba has also joined international voices calling for the full implementation of the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement, which laid out a roadmap for political transition, power-sharing, and democratic elections. However, delays, security incidents, and political disagreements have hindered progress, prompting growing concern from the international community.
Staunton’s call for renewed dialogue echoes repeated appeals by the United Nations and regional bodies such as IGAD, who have warned that continued violence risks undermining the peace gains made over the past five years.
