(Malakal) – The United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), in partnership with UNESCO, hosted a large concert in Malakal, Upper Nile State in an effort to promote unity and peace among communities divided by conflict. This region has experienced heightened violence and political instability in recent months.
Thousands of residents filled the stadium in Malakal to attend the concert, which was headlined by South Sudanese musician Emmanuel Kembe. The event aimed to bring together people from different backgrounds to reflect on peace and shared identity through the universal language of music.
As drums echoed and peace-themed lyrics filled the air, many in the crowd sang along and danced, creating a moment of unity in a place where division has become too familiar. The concert was not just entertainment—it was a statement of hope and a reminder of the collective desire for a peaceful future.
Speaking at the event, Kembe used his platform to call for a successful democratic transition. He expressed support for the long-awaited elections in South Sudan and emphasized the importance of national development and reconciliation.
The timing of the concert was significant. Since early 2025, political tensions and violence have escalated across parts of South Sudan, threatening the peace process outlined in the 2018 Revitalized Agreement. Malakal and surrounding areas have been especially affected, with ongoing insecurity displacing civilians and straining humanitarian services.
Despite these challenges, the concert offered a rare moment of joy and togetherness. Local authorities in Upper Nile also voiced their support for peacebuilding efforts. They stressed their commitment to working with national and international partners to restore stability and promote long-term development in the state.
