Wonduruba’s Mongiling Road Reopens After Year of Insecurity and Closure
(Wonduruba, Central Equatoria State) – The Mongiling Road in Wonduruba Administrative Payam has officially reopened after nearly a year of closure due to insecurity following a deadly attack in October 2024.
The reopening is seen as a crucial step in reconnecting communities, boosting trade and promoting peace in the area.
The road had remained closed since 9 October 2024, when violence erupted, resulting in the tragic deaths of 11 civilians and leaving four others wounded. The incident led to increased tension and halted access to key areas of Wonduruba, cutting off movement, trade and essential services.
The reopening ceremony, held on 20 June 2025, was attended by several high level local officials. Leading the event were Hon. Towongo Stephen Michael, Administrative Coordinator of Wonduruba, Hon. Amule Michael Lasu, Member of the National Parliament representing Wonduruba and Eng. Taban Alison, Secretary General of the Wonduruba Community.
Security restoration was made possible through a combined operation involving units of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF), particularly the Commando Unit and Ground Forces. These forces worked in coordination to secure the area and ensure the road was safe for public use once again.
Hon. Towongo Stephen expressed his gratitude to the people and leadership of Wonduruba both within South Sudan and abroad. He also recognised the role played by the national army in restoring security.
“The reopening of Mongiling Road is not merely about restoring physical access. It is a powerful affirmation of our people’s resilience and shared determination,” he said during the ceremony.
“This road is a lifeline. It reconnects families, facilitates trade, especially agricultural business, and symbolises a return to hope and normalcy.”
He added that no external force would come to bring lasting peace or development to the area, urging local communities to take responsibility for their own future.
“We are responsible for our own lives and development. No one is coming to make our place peaceful and secure. No one is coming to make these roads accessible. It is our joint responsibility.”
Following the event, the delegation travelled to the Togolo area, stopping at the Toremet River, which is known for its gold mining activity. There, they witnessed ongoing mining operations being conducted by individuals from various communities across the payam.
In accordance with cultural traditions, the traditional landowners carried out rituals to bless the land, underscoring their commitment to peace, harmony, and cooperation.
The ceremony was a rare moment of unity, attended by traditional leaders, youth, women’s groups, and community members representing all clans of Wonduruba.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Amule Michael Lasu praised the Administrative Coordinator, community chiefs and local residents for their efforts in securing and reopening the area. He also encouraged continuous unity among the communities to ensure equitable benefit from the area’s natural resources.
“The historical background and land ownership in the mining areas should be well documented and respected so that no clan feels cheated,” he stated.
