(JUBA) – The South Sudan Football Federation (SSFF) has confirmed three candidates for its upcoming presidential election following a completed vetting process. The current SSFF president, Augustino Maduot Parek, will contest for a second term, facing competition from Francis Michael and Kamal Akol.
The electoral committee confirmed that all three passed the eligibility criteria and will appear on the ballot. The winner of the vote will lead the SSFF for a two year term.
Maduot, a South Sudanese police officer and current president of the regional football body CECAFA, has led the SSFF since 2021. During his time in office, he is credited with the renovation of Juba Stadium and overseeing the qualification of South Sudan’s Under 20 national team for the U20 Africa Cup of Nations. These accomplishments have become a central part of his re-election campaign.
Francis Michael and Kamal Akol, both active figures in South Sudan’s football landscape, will be looking to unseat Maduot in what is expected to be a closely watched race.
The electoral process has not been without controversy. One of the aspirants, Teng Deng, was disqualified after failing the eligibility requirements. His removal from the list has sparked internal debate, particularly after SSFA executive committee member and spokesperson Albino Deng made public statements opposing his candidacy.
The SSFA distanced itself from Deng’s comments, issuing an official statement to clarify that the remarks were personal and not representative of the association’s position.
Despite this, tensions remain high ahead of the vote.
In addition to the presidential race, delegates will also elect two vice presidents and other members of the executive committee. According to the electoral body, 38 delegates will participate in the voting process.
