(JUBA) – The Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr Marial Dongrin Ater, has held discussions with a visiting delegation from the African Development Bank (AfDB) on key development and economic governance priorities. The meeting took place on Wednesday in Juba and focused on enhancing cooperation between South Sudan and the regional financial institution.
The AfDB delegation was led by Abdoulaye Coulibaly, Director for Governance and Economic Reform and Themba Bhebhe, the AfDB Country Manager for South Sudan. The team expressed appreciation for South Sudan’s recent progress in public financial management, particularly the establishment of the new Revenue Administration Institute.
The Institute is part of wider government efforts to modernise revenue collection and tax management across the country. The initiative is expected to improve transparency and efficiency in the mobilisation and administration of public funds.
AfDB officials commended the government for taking steps toward institutional reform, noting that the establishment of the Institute marks a significant milestone in strengthening fiscal discipline and accountability.
The delegation reaffirmed the Bank’s commitment to supporting South Sudan’s development priorities. In particular, they pledged to increase assistance in areas such as natural resource management, public financial systems and delivery of essential social services.
During the meeting, Dr Ater welcomed the positive remarks from the Bank and thanked AfDB for its continued support. He highlighted the importance of strong partnerships with development institutions to support the country’s recovery and long term economic growth.
The discussions also explored future areas of collaboration between the Ministry of Finance and the African Development Bank. These include targeted investments in critical sectors aimed at boosting sustainable development and improving the lives of ordinary citizens.
AfDB has been an active partner in South Sudan’s reconstruction and governance initiatives since independence in 2011. Its ongoing support includes technical assistance, institutional capacity building and funding for public infrastructure.
