(JUBA) – A government team led by the Minister of Finance and Planning, Athian Ding Athian, has travelled to Washington DC to take part in the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group.
The visit aims to strengthen South Sudan’s economic relations and seek wider financial backing.
The delegation includes the Central Bank Governor, Addis Ababa Othow, the Commissioner General of the South Sudan Revenue Authority, Simon Akuei, the Undersecretary for Planning in the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Benjamin Ayali, and senior officials from the ministry.
Upon arrival, the delegation began its programme with a meeting with Ndiame Diop, the World Bank Vice President for the Eastern and Southern Africa region. The discussion focused on the progress of World Bank funded projects in South Sudan and how these can be better implemented.
Throughout the week, the officials will attend formal sessions of both the IMF and World Bank Group. They are also expected to meet different international partners and economic actors in separate engagements. According to officials, these are aimed at lobbying for increased support to help stabilise and grow the South Sudanese economy.
No financial pledges have yet been disclosed, but the delegation is expected to raise issues such as budget support, debt sustainability, public finance reforms and development project financing.
