(JUBA) – The Minister of Finance and Planning, Hon. Athian Ding Athian, held discussions on Thursday with the Country Manager of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Mr. Themba Bhebhe, on the progress and coordination of projects supported by the Bank in South Sudan.
The meeting, which took place in Juba on 18 September 2025, reviewed AfDB’s ongoing and planned initiatives in the country. These projects cover road infrastructure, power transmission lines and the strengthening of institutions to improve service delivery.
Mr. Bhebhe outlined AfDB’s priority areas of support, noting that investment in transport and energy will play a vital role in connecting communities and driving economic growth. He added that institutional capacity building is equally important to ensure that government systems can deliver services effectively.
Minister Athian welcomed AfDB’s engagement and praised the Bank for standing with the people of South Sudan during a period of economic challenges. He underlined his ministry’s commitment to work closely with AfDB in order to achieve lasting development outcomes.
The Minister said cooperation with partners such as AfDB was essential for strengthening the economy, creating opportunities, and improving infrastructure that directly benefits citizens.
South Sudan continues to rely on international financial institutions like AfDB to support its national priorities, particularly in areas where government resources remain limited.
According to a press statement by the Finance Ministry, the government hopes that the partnership will expand to cover not only infrastructure but also areas such as agriculture, health and education.
