(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Electricity has returned to nearly all medical and maternity wards at Yei Civil Hospital, providing relief to staff and patients after years of power outages.
The hospital, a regional referral centre, has operated without electricity since the conflict began in 2016. During this time, medical staff relied on torches and private lights to treat patients.
Monika Tabu, a patient caretaker, said: “I am happy because there is power supply in the hospital through the night here at the maternity ward. We thank the hospital administration and development partners for this great improvement at the hospital.”
She added: “I am calling on the government and development partners to ensure that the hospital is well supported with sustainable power supply and medicines to reduce the suffering of many patients in Yei River County.”
Charles Mabe, a patient recently discharged, told Access Radio: “I have seen there is electricity at the general admission ward, and I am happy because this improvement has addressed fear at night hours, and it has also helped health workers to administer routine medication at night.”
Hospital administrator Towongo Ronald Morrish confirmed the restoration of electricity and security lights within the hospital compound. He said: “I can confirm to you that we now have constant solar power supply in all the wards within the hospital. It is only the X-ray system which is not yet connected to the power supply because it consumes a lot of power.”
The solar system was provided by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) with a guarantee of reliable power supply.
Established in 1917, Yei Civil Hospital is the only referral hospital for patients in Yei River County, as well as Lainya and Morobo counties. It also serves patients from border areas of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
