(NAIROBI) – The Embassy of the Republic of South Sudan in Nairobi has officially denied claims that 19 South Sudanese nationals were arrested in Kenya in connection with recent street protests. The Embassy issued a press statement on 7 July 2025, dismissing the document circulating on social media as fake and misleading.
The false statement, which appears to be a fabricated press release from the Kenyan National Police Service, included a list of foreign nationalities allegedly arrested during protests in Kenya, with South Sudanese nationals among them.
According to the South Sudanese Embassy, the Kenyan National Police Service has publicly disowned the statement and clarified that it did not issue any such communication.
The Embassy confirmed that, as of the date of the clarification, no South Sudanese citizen had been reported arrested or detained in relation to the ongoing protests in Kenya.
In its statement, the Embassy urged South Sudanese citizens and the public at large to disregard the misinformation and to avoid spreading unverified reports. It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights, safety and dignity of South Sudanese nationals residing in Kenya.
The Embassy also advised all South Sudanese to remain calm, avoid involvement in protests and comply with Kenyan laws. Citizens in need of support were encouraged to contact the Embassy directly for assistance.
For accurate information, the public is urged to rely only on official Embassy communication channels and those of the Kenyan government.
The Embassy’s intervention was welcomed by many South Sudanese nationals in Kenya who expressed concern over the misinformation and the potential for stigmatisation.
