Student Shot Dead in Yei Robbery Attack as Police Launch Investigation

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – An 18-year-old student was shot dead by an unidentified gunman in Hai Delib, about four kilometres north of Yei Town, on Tuesday evening, prompting police to open a murder investigation.

The victim, identified as Martin Wani, a Senior Three student at Excell International School, was reportedly attacked while returning home from town at around 7 p.m. Local authorities said the assailant robbed him of his mobile phone before shooting him.

Speaking to reporters at the scene, the victim’s brother, Clement Ita Alex, said Martin was shot in the back and rushed to Yei Civil Hospital, where he later died from severe bleeding.

“What happened yesterday was very bad. My brother was a student and also ran a small airtime business. He was attacked and shot by an unknown armed man. We took him to the hospital, but he later died,” Clement said.

The Headman of Hai Delib, Timayo Lole, condemned the killing, describing it as shocking for residents of the area.

“The police responded quickly and took the victim to the hospital. This incident surprised everyone because we do not know where the attacker came from. We call on residents to report any suspicious movements of armed individuals to the authorities,” Lole said.

Local leaders say the incident comes amid growing concerns over insecurity in the area.

The Head Chief of Luparate Boma, John Bakata Sindani, said reports of armed criminals and roadside robberies have increased despite relative calm in recent months.

“We are deeply saddened by the killing of this schoolboy. My message to the government and security agencies is to reinforce patrols and strengthen security in the area. Such incidents create fear among the population,” Bakata said.

Meanwhile, Mario Kenyi, the officer in charge of Criminal Investigations at Luparate Police Outpost, confirmed that a murder case has been registered and forwarded to county authorities for further investigation.

“We received a report from the victim’s family. He was taken to hospital but later died in the early hours of Wednesday. Preliminary information indicates the attacker was armed and stole the victim’s phone. Security agencies will investigate and pursue those responsible,” Kenyi said.

Police have urged members of the public to cooperate with investigators by providing any information that could help identify the suspect.
