(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – At least five shops were broken into during a night time burglary in Yei town, with thieves stealing cash and goods worth millions of South Sudanese Pounds, raising fresh concerns over security for local businesses.
The incident took place on Monday night along the Eden to Modison area on the Hai Jamia route, where unknown individuals targeted several premises. Local media reported that the attackers forced entry into the shops and made away with money and merchandise.
Among the affected businesses was Twins Hardware, where the suspects reportedly damaged and removed CCTV cameras before carrying out the theft. Authorities said there was also an attempted break in at the same premises.
Business representatives confirmed that five shops were successfully targeted during the incident. The scale of the losses has not been fully disclosed, but traders said the stolen goods and cash amount to several million South Sudanese Pounds.
The burglary has raised concern among traders in Yei, a key commercial centre in Central Equatoria, where small businesses play an important role in local livelihoods and supply chains.
Local authorities and business leaders have urged shop owners to strengthen security measures, including improving physical protection and monitoring of premises, particularly at night.
They also called for closer cooperation between traders and security agencies to help prevent further incidents and improve response to crime in the area.
