(YEI RIVER COUNTY) — The Youth Leader of Yei River County has warned young people to avoid unnecessary movement and loitering at late night hours due to security concerns in the town.
In an interview with Access Radio on Thursday at his office, Gaga Frank Justin cautioned youth particularly young people against late-night activities such as attending clubs, discos, sports events, and shows.
He said night movement exposes residents especially youth and teenagers to risks posed by criminal gang groups operating in parts of the town, many of whom are reportedly young people.
“Moving alone at night exposes you to greater risks of being attacked by gang groups. We are also seeing cases where young girls and even young boys move at night in dark places and corners. This is a serious concern to our community, especially the youth,” he said.
Gaga advised young people to avoid staying in poorly lit areas and dark corners, noting that some criminal groups hide in such locations where visibility is low.
Call for Youth Support and Empowerment
The youth leader appealed to the government and development partners to provide grants and support for organized youth groups, particularly registered youth cooperatives and community-based initiatives promoting peace and self-reliance.
“I want to appeal to the government and development partners that it is very important to support such initiatives of young people to reduce gang activities and idleness among the youth,” he stressed.
He encouraged young people involved in gang-related activities to reconsider their actions, saying such behavior destabilizes the community and threatens peace.
Focus on Agriculture and Self-Reliance
With the start of the first farming season, Gaga urged young people to engage in agriculture by forming cooperatives and organized groups to cultivate crops and generate income.
He emphasized that agriculture can help promote livelihoods, reduce crime, and contribute to the development of the Republic of South Sudan.
The youth leader concluded by encouraging all young people to take part in positive activities that promote peace, economic empowerment, and long-term community stability.
