Footballer Killed in Night Attack in Yei

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – A young footballer in Yei town has been killed and another man seriously injured after an attack by unknown armed men late on Sunday night, according to residents and police.

The victim, Emmanuel Kanjo Kenedy, a senior three student at Emmanuel Model Secondary School and a well known football player in the town, was reportedly attacked at about 10 at night as he walked home near Lion’s Club on Hai Nyakama street.

A resident who only gave his name as Ale for safety reasons said Kanjo was attacked together with the manager of Lion’s Club who had escorted him towards the main road. The manager survived but suffered serious injuries and is currently being treated at Yei Civil Hospital.

Another resident, Raimond Ade from Hai Gabat area, said the killing has caused fear among communities in the town. He urged the authorities to improve security as the festive season approaches.

“We ask the government to protect civilians and their properties especially as Christmas and New Year celebrations are coming. There should be more police patrols at night.”

Local human rights defender Victor Batali Silas strongly condemned the killing and called for a full investigation.

“I ask the commissioner and security agencies to investigate and bring the attackers to face justice.”

The Police Inspector for Yei River County, Major General Ali Abudal Tif, confirmed the crime and said investigations have already started.

“A case has been opened and we are working to find out what happened and who was involved.”

The death has added to growing concerns about the safety of young people in Yei and the increasing presence of criminals in local neighbourhoods. Residents say more visible policing is needed to prevent further attacks.
