(JUBA / YEI ) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit has approved the establishment of a new public university in South Sudan’s Yei River County.
Kiir gave the verbal approval during a meeting with Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil on Thursday.
In a statement posted on the official Facebook page of the Office of the President, it said:
“His Excellency, President Salva Kiir Mayardit has approved the establishment of Yei University at the former UNMISS base in Yei Town to widen access to higher education.”
Last month, Governor Adil said the university is intended to address the growing need for higher education opportunities in the state.
He noted that while the University of Juba operates as a national public university under the national government, the new institution will expand access to higher education for students in Central Equatoria State and beyond.
“I took the decision to establish a public university at the former UNMISS base in Yei, to be called Yei University. We will provide the necessary support and begin coordination so that our children can start enrolling, as the University of Juba is a national public institution,” Adil said.
During the meeting, Governor Adil also reported to the president that the security situation remains calm and stable following a deadly attack on the Kulipapa mining area that left more than 30 people dead.
He added that joined security measures have been put in place to restore peace and stability in the area.
President Kiir welcomed the Governor’s efforts and urged him to continue strengthening security measures across the state. He emphasized the importance of coordination and community awareness as the country prepares for the December 2026 elections.
