Yei Residents Welcome Kiir’s Approval of University of Yei

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Residents of Yei River County have welcomed President Salva Kiir Mayardit’s Executive Policy Order approving the establishment of the University of Yei, describing the move as a major step towards improving access to higher education in Central Equatoria State.

According to a press release issued by the Office of the President on 17 July 2026, the directive seeks to expand access to higher education, strengthen research and promote technological innovation across South Sudan.

The announcement has been met with excitement among residents, particularly young people and parents who have long faced challenges accessing university education outside the county.

Grace Joseph, a youth and student of Yei, said the establishment of a public university in the area would reduce the burden on students who are forced to travel to other parts of the country or abroad in search of higher education opportunities.

“As youth of Yei, we have suffered because we had to travel to other countries looking for better universities. We are grateful because we now have a university at home, and this historic institution will bring opportunities closer to the people,” she said.

Joseph applauded President Kiir for approving the establishment of the university, saying it would create new opportunities for local students and contribute to the development of the region.

Another resident, Joseph Beid Zunguwa, also welcomed the decision, describing it as a relief for many parents struggling to support their children’s education away from home.

“I am very happy, and many parents are happy as well. Sending children to Juba or other parts of the country is costly. Having a university in Yei will help our children study closer to home and allow us to support them more effectively,” Zunguwa said.

Parents have also expressed hope that the university will help address educational challenges facing many families in the area.

Mary Gire, a mother of three children whose children recently completed secondary school, said the new institution would make higher education more accessible to many young people.

“I have three children who have finished Senior Four, and it has been difficult for me to send them to study at a public university in Juba. I am confident that this initiative will encourage more students to pursue university education,” she said.

Residents believe the establishment of the University of Yei will not only improve access to higher education but also stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities and strengthen the county’s role as an educational hub in South Sudan.

The approval of the university marks a significant milestone for Yei River County and is expected to bring academic opportunities closer to thousands of students across Central Equatoria State and neighbouring regions.
