(Juba) – The marking of South Sudan’s 2024 Senior Four national examination papers will officially begin next week, ending a six month delay caused by a prolonged liquidity crisis at the central bank.
This was confirmed by the Minister of General Education, Kuyok Abol Kuyok, during a public update on the examination process.
Students across the country who sat for the South Sudan Certificate of Secondary Education in late 2024 have voiced increasing frustration over the lack of results, with many concerned that the delay could disrupt university admissions and the national academic calendar.
Minister Kuyok acknowledged these concerns, saying that while the government had approved funding for the marking process, the funds could not be accessed due to limited liquidity at the Bank of South Sudan.
“Colleagues at the central bank are doing their best to resolve the situation,” he said, expressing hope that the situation would improve within days.
According to the Minister, the markers are expected to travel to Juba next week to begin reviewing the examination scripts.
“The marking exercise will start next week. We understand the frustration this delay has caused for students and families across the country, and we are committed to ensuring the process moves forward swiftly and transparently,” he stated.
The delay has triggered widespread concern from students, parents, and education stakeholders alike.
Many have warned that continued postponements risk damaging the credibility of national examinations and further complicating admission timelines for universities and colleges.
South Sudan’s education system has faced several challenges in recent years, including teacher shortages, funding gaps, and weak infrastructure. The current delay has once again revealed the link between the country’s broader financial challenges and the functioning of its public services.
The national liquidity crisis, which has been affecting many sectors, is rooted in difficulties at the central bank in releasing approved government funds in a timely manner.
As of June 25, 2025, the exchange rate officially stands at approximately 1 USD to 4,600 South Sudanese Pounds (SSP), with teachers and education service providers often impacted by delayed or irregular payments.
Despite the challenges, the Ministry of General Education has assured the public that once the marking begins, efforts will be made to complete the process efficiently and release results without further delays.
With the marking now confirmed to begin, thousands of candidates are once again hopeful that the long wait will soon come to an end.
