(Wau) – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has completed a series of patrols across Western Bahr el Ghazal aimed at promoting community dialogue and strengthening local peacebuilding efforts.
During these visits, UN peacekeepers met with local authorities, traditional leaders, and community members to discuss pressing concerns around safety, security, and livelihoods.
The initiative is part of UNMISS’ wider approach to peacebuilding in South Sudan, which emphasizes dialogue, inclusion, and community trust as key tools for long term stability.
In the areas visited, the peacekeepers used the patrols to listen directly to residents’ concerns and explore how collaborative solutions can improve daily life and prevent local conflict.
Local leaders expressed appreciation for the presence of the UN teams, saying their visits show solidarity and support at a time when many communities feel neglected or vulnerable.
“When we see our sisters and brothers approaching in their white vehicles wearing their blue helmets, we know they are here to listen to our concerns and help us find ways to make our lives better,” one community leader told UNMISS.
Western Bahr el Ghazal, with its main town of Wau, remains one of the areas in South Sudan where community tensions, food insecurity, and underdevelopment pose risks to long term peace.
Recent periods of calm have allowed space for peacebuilding work, and UNMISS patrols are seen as a way to protect and encourage that fragile stability.
According to UNMISS, the patrols were not only about assessing the security environment but also about building trust and opening communication lines with local stakeholders.
Discussions often covered the root causes of conflict, including disputes over land, limited access to services, and the role of youth in community development.
In many of the villages visited, peacekeepers also encouraged cooperation between chiefs, women’s groups, and local administration in solving everyday challenges. They offered reassurance that the UN would continue to support efforts that put communities at the center of peace processes.
UNMISS continues to maintain a presence across South Sudan in line with its mandate from the United Nations Security Council, which includes protection of civilians, facilitation of humanitarian assistance, and support for the implementation of peace agreements.
Though the patrols did not include financial commitments, they are viewed by residents and local leaders as a vital symbol of international engagement.
In a context where government resources remain stretched and many services are limited, the visible support of peacekeepers helps fill critical gaps in dialogue and protection.
Many communities continue to struggle with daily economic challenges. Jobs are scarce, inflation is high, and local markets remain vulnerable to disruption.
In this setting, conversations around livelihoods such as farming, small trade, and youth employment have become as urgent as those on security.
For many in Western Bahr el Ghazal, UNMISS patrols offer an opportunity for communities to voice their concerns, receive acknowledgment, and engage in peaceful dialogue with both local and international actors.
