(Aweil) – Traffic authorities in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State have issued a ban on the use of tinted vehicle windows and spotlights, citing growing security concerns and a link to rising criminal activity involving vehicles with obscured interiors.
Colonel Gabriel Ungom Autiak, Acting Director of the State Traffic Police, announced the decision following multiple reports that suggested criminals were using heavily tinted cars to hide their identities and commit crimes without being easily identified.
The directive, which took effect immediately, is part of state level efforts to enhance road safety and maintain public order. Col. Ungom emphasized that allowing visibility into vehicle interiors is essential for effective law enforcement and the protection of civilians.
Authorities believe that the visibility issue has made it more difficult for security forces to monitor suspicious behavior, contributing to a spike in incidents involving unknown individuals using vehicles to escape detection.
In addition to banning tinted windows and spotlights, traffic police are urging all drivers to adhere to internationally recognized speed limits. Col. Ungom noted that speeding remains a serious concern, particularly in urban areas and on poorly lit roads, where the risk of harming pedestrians, livestock, and persons with disabilities is high.
“We urge drivers to slow down and observe traffic rules. The safety of pedestrians, especially vulnerable groups, must be a priority,” he stated. He also called on residents to use road shoulders instead of walking in the middle of roadways, a practice that increases the risk of accidents.
This directive follows a pattern of rising enforcement actions taken in various parts of South Sudan to address traffic violations, reduce road related deaths, and support community safety.
Similar restrictions on vehicle modifications have been implemented in other urban areas, but Northern Bahr el Ghazal is among the first to explicitly connect tinted windows to criminal concealment.
Officials hope that tighter enforcement of traffic regulations will not only deter crime but also build public trust in law enforcement efforts.
Citizens are being encouraged to report any vehicles that appear suspicious or fail to comply with the new regulations.
The ban is expected to remain in force until further notice, and violators could face fines or have their vehicles impounded.
No monetary amounts were mentioned regarding fines or penalties.
Local authorities have claimed ongoing public awareness campaigns and increased patrols will support the smooth implementation of the new rules.
