(JUBA) – The National Examination Council of South Sudan has completed the marking of the 2024 national secondary school examinations, with final results expected to be released before the end of July, according to a senior education official.
Simon Nyok Deng, the Secretary General of the Council, told media that the marking phase is finished and that the remaining delay is due to financial constraints.
The Council has submitted a request for 280 million South Sudanese Pounds (approximately $60,870 USD) to the Bank of South Sudan to cover the outstanding administrative processes, including payments to exam markers.
More than 1,000 teachers who participated in the marking exercise have not yet received their allowances.
“We have finished the marking,” said Mr Nyok in the Wednesday interview. “Now we are analysing the results. The good news is that we are pushing forward with the process, and I am confident we can release the results before July ends.”
Mr Nyok extended apologies to the candidates and their families for the delays. He explained that the financial situation in the country had created challenges in meeting operational costs for examination logistics.
He added that the Council has been engaging with government policymakers to explore the possibility of adjusting examination fees to make the examination system more sustainable in future.
“We are asking policymakers to let us review examination fees. Many parents are now willing to contribute to ensure that exams are conducted properly and that results are released within one or two months,” he explained.
Mr Nyok said the government is considering this proposal and emphasised that any fee adjustment would aim at improving the timely delivery of exam results.
He acknowledged the growing frustrations among students, who have waited for over half a year for their results and appealed for patience and understanding during this final phase of result processing.
