(Yei) – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has completed a five day Training of Trainers (TOT) workshop for journalists and media professionals in Yei River County, South Sudan.
Held from 24 to 28 June 2025, the training aimed to improve journalistic skills with a focus on ethical reporting, conflict sensitivity, the triple nexus approach and long term media sustainability.
Participants from different counties in Central Equatoria took part in the workshop, including representatives from Yei, Lainya and Kajo Keji.
Many praised the training for its relevance and the quality of knowledge shared.
James Innocent, a journalist from Yei, said the workshop gave him better tools for writing impactful stories. James Juma from Lainya highlighted how the sessions deepened his understanding of journalism, and Kenyi Joseph from Kajo Keji said it improved his skills in managing social media content more effectively.
Facilitator Lupai Samburo expressed his commitment to continue supporting participants beyond the workshop. He stated that building a strong media community in South Sudan requires ongoing guidance and mentorship.
“I am open to further engaging with all trainees as they handle real-world media challenges,” he said.
Also speaking at the closing of the training was Buga Alex, coordinator of the Union of Journalists of South Sudan (UJOSS), who pledged to keep pushing for more capacity-building opportunities for journalists. “Training is key to building a responsible media sector. I will continue to advocate for more training sessions like this,” he said.
Representing the County Commissioner at the event’s conclusion, Isaac Mathew, Inspector of Local Government in Yei River County, urged journalists to practise accurate and professional reporting. He assured them that the local government would remain supportive of efforts to strengthen the role of media in the community.
The IOM’s lead partner in the training shared optimism about the future of journalism in South Sudan, especially as more journalists receive professional guidance. The partner stressed the importance of cooperation between media actors, stating that collaboration can lead to a more informed public and promote peace across the country.
