Morobo County Launches Four Day Polio Vaccination Campaign

(MOROBO COUNTY) – Morobo County launched a polio vaccination campaign on 15th October 2026 at the county headquarters.

The campaign is part of a nationwide government programme supported by the World Health Organization and UNICEF.

It targets children aged 0 to 59 months to ensure the eradication of the polio virus, which endangers the lives of children across the country.

During the launch, Hon. Moro Isaac Johnson, the Caretaker Commissioner of Morobo County, urged all parents to ensure that children within the required age bracket are vaccinated to protect future generations from the polio virus.

The exercise is expected to last for four days and covers all five payams of Morobo County.

The campaign forms part of South Sudan’s national polio outbreak response. Two separate circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus outbreaks are active in the country: cVDPV1 and cVDPV2.

The cVDPV1 outbreak was officially declared on 13th April 2026 after the confirmation of sequencing results.

Three cVDPV2 cases were reported from Jonglei and Warrap states, with paralysis onset between May and July 2026.

Round 2 of the Supplementary National Immunization Days campaign, synchronized with Ethiopia, reached 809,994 of 877,943 target children, achieving 92% coverage nationally.

Preliminary lot quality assurance sampling across 20 counties showed 15 passed, four were on warning and one was very poor.

The response uses two oral vaccines: the novel oral polio vaccine type 2 for type 2 poliovirus, and the bivalent oral polio vaccine for types 1 and 3.

Vaccination teams use a house-to-house approach alongside temporary posts at markets and public gathering places to reach eligible children.

Morobo County achieved 82% polio immunisation coverage in a previous round in November 2025, ranking second in Central Equatoria State despite security challenges that limited access to some villages.
