(JUBA COUNTY) – South Sudan is commemorating World Breastfeeding Week from 1 to 7 August 2025, joining countries around the globe in promoting breastfeeding as a vital component of maternal and child health. The national events are taking place under the global theme, “Prioritise Breastfeeding; Create Sustainable Support Systems.”
The annual observance calls for a collective effort from families, healthcare providers, employers and policymakers to support breastfeeding mothers. The Ministry of Health and its partners in South Sudan are urging communities to recognise breastfeeding not only as a mother’s responsibility but as a shared duty requiring the active involvement of all sectors.
Officials say exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life is one of the most effective ways to protect infants from malnutrition and common childhood illnesses such as diarrhoea and respiratory infections. After six months, complementary feeding should be introduced alongside continued breastfeeding until the child reaches at least two years of age.
Health experts describe breastfeeding as both cost effective and environmentally friendly, noting that it plays a key role in reducing the climate impact associated with formula production, packaging and distribution. At the same time, breastfeeding empowers women and builds stronger communities by improving both child and maternal health outcomes.
Breastfeeding is particularly important in South Sudan, where malnutrition remains a widespread challenge due to food insecurity, conflict, and limited access to healthcare. Health officials stress that supporting breastfeeding is a practical step toward improving child survival rates and achieving universal health coverage.
The Ministry of Health, with support from international organisations, is using the week to raise awareness across the country through campaigns, radio messaging, health facility sessions, and community gatherings. Activities aim to inform mothers and families about the benefits of breastfeeding and the importance of creating an enabling environment at home, at work and in health facilities.
