(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Residents of Yei River County, representatives from humanitarian organizations, development partners and local authorities gathered at Yei Freedom Square to commemorate World Mental Health Day, with renewed calls for greater awareness and support for people struggling with stress, trauma and mental health challenges.
Organizers said the event was aimed at highlighting the importance of mental well-being and encouraging communities to seek help when facing psychological distress.
Speaking to Access Radio from Yei freedom square ahead of the commemoration on Monday morning, Moses Asiki Justine, a member of the organising committee, said the event comes at a critical time as Yei has recently witnessed an increase in suicide cases.
“This day is important for us as people of Yei because many members of our community are going through stressful moments, and some have taken their own lives because they do not know where to find help,” Asiki said. “This day will help raise awareness and encourage people to seek support.”
He noted that more than ten suicide-related deaths had been recorded in Yei between September and October, describing the trend as a major loss to the community.
Asiki attributed the increase in suicide cases to a combination of poverty, insecurity and the ongoing economic hardships facing many families.
“We are facing challenges related to poverty, insecurity and the economic crisis in the country. These difficulties have affected many people and contributed to the rise in suicide cases,” he said.
The celebration featured a march through the town, cultural performances and keynote speeches from various stakeholders, all focused on promoting mental health awareness and encouraging community support for those experiencing emotional and psychological difficulties.
Mental health advocates at the event urged residents to speak openly about mental health challenges and seek professional or community-based assistance when needed.
