South Sudan Forms First Biodiversity Finance Committee

(JUBA) – South Sudan has set up its first national committee to guide financing for biodiversity conservation.

The Biodiversity Finance Initiative National Steering Committee brings together government institutions, development partners, the private sector, civil society and academia.

The committee is chaired by the Ministry of Finance and Planning and co-chaired by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

It will provide strategic guidance and oversight as the country prepares its first Biodiversity Finance Plan.

The plan will aim to align with national biodiversity conservation and development priorities.

The committee was formed through the United Nations Development Programme-led Biodiversity Finance Initiative, known as BIOFIN, which is funded by the Global Environment Facility.

BIOFIN supports countries in identifying sustainable financing solutions for biodiversity conservation.

It also works to improve the effective use of available resources.

This work complements the ongoing update of South Sudan’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan.

It also supports efforts to protect the country’s natural heritage for future generations.
