(Juba) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit has reaffirmed that South Sudan will hold its first general elections since independence on 26 December 2026. The confirmation came during a meeting with Professor Abednego Akok Kachuol, Chairperson of the National Election Commission, who delivered a report on the country’s electoral preparations.
According to Professor Akok, President Kiir has instructed the Ministry of Finance to release funds needed to support the upcoming elections. No exact amount was disclosed during the briefing.
Professor Akok also confirmed that national security agencies have been directed to work closely with the Electoral Commission to maintain order and ensure a transparent and peaceful election environment. He stressed that the upcoming elections will mark the official end of South Sudan’s transitional period, which was extended under previous political agreements among key parties.
He further announced that the Electoral Commission will soon convene a stakeholder meeting to discuss and accelerate remaining activities, including voter registration, civic education, and logistical coordination. These discussions will also help ensure the inclusion of all major political and civil society actors in the process.
Professor Akok added that the Commission currently has operational offices, with adequate equipment and staffing, in six states. Construction is underway to establish similar offices in the remaining states to support nationwide election activities and ensure all eligible voters are served.
The announcement of a firm election date comes amid growing calls from both domestic and international observers for South Sudan to follow through on its commitment to democratic transition. Delays in past electoral timelines have drawn criticism and created uncertainty over political stability and governance reforms.
