Northern Bahr el Ghazal Governor Pledges Support to Martyrs’ Families

(UDHUM) – The Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, Simon Ober Mawut, on Wednesday joined the people of Udhum in Mariem West Payam to mark the 20th Anniversary Commemoration of Martyrs Day. The ceremony paid tribute to South Sudanese who lost their lives during the liberation struggle.

Governor Mawut used the occasion to honour the memory of the fallen heroes and reaffirm the state government’s support to their surviving families.

In his address, he described the martyrs’ sacrifices as the foundation of South Sudan’s independence and urged the public to keep their legacy alive through unity, development and respect for national values.

He pledged the state administration’s continued assistance to the families of the martyrs, promising that their suffering and sacrifices would not be forgotten.

“Their blood gave birth to this nation,” he said, “and it is our duty to ensure their families are never left behind.”

This year’s event was held in honour of the late Paramount Chief of the Chimel area, Kuach Mayiel, who was recognised for his exceptional leadership and dedication during the liberation era.

The commemoration brought together a wide cross section of leaders and communities. Attendees included state advisors, ministers, national and state parliamentarians, heads of independent commissions, the Undersecretary for Veterans Affairs, leaders of security agencies, traditional chiefs and representatives of youth and women’s organisations.

Mawut called for greater efforts in uplifting vulnerable families of the martyrs, especially in remote areas like Mariem West.

No direct financial pledges were disclosed during the ceremony. However, the governor indicated that support, whether through social services or commemorative initiatives, would remain a priority for the state government.
