Kiir, Swiss Envoy Discuss Peace and Regional Stability/SCREEN GRAB: Press Unit, Office of the President
(JUBA) – President Salva Kiir has renewed his commitment to fully implement South Sudan’s revitalised peace agreement, describing it as a critical step in the country’s path toward democratic governance.
Speaking on Monday during a meeting with the Swiss Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Ambassador Sylvain Astier, at the State House in Juba, President Kiir said South Sudan’s leadership remains focused on delivering lasting peace and preparing for elections.
The discussion centred on South Sudan’s continued role in promoting peace across the region, particularly in neighbouring Sudan, which is facing protracted armed conflict and a deepening humanitarian emergency.
Ambassador Astier expressed Switzerland’s support for South Sudan’s peace efforts, especially those aimed at ensuring inclusive governance, respecting international humanitarian principles, and safeguarding civilians and humanitarian workers in conflict zones.
The ambassador also acknowledged South Sudan’s recent contributions to regional stability and its engagement with partners to resolve border disputes and refugee issues linked to the crisis in Sudan.
In support of these efforts, the Swiss government pledged $10 million (equivalent to 46 billion South Sudanese Pounds) in combined humanitarian and development assistance to South Sudan. The funding will support ongoing relief operations, peacebuilding activities and institutional reforms to strengthen public service delivery.
President Kiir welcomed the Swiss contribution, noting that continued international engagement remains vital as the country prepares for elections and works to rebuild institutions affected by years of conflict.
Officials from both sides agreed on the importance of regional cooperation and coordination in addressing cross border challenges, including the movement of displaced populations, humanitarian access and security threats.
The revitalised peace agreement, signed in 2018, is due to culminate in national elections. However, delays in implementing key provisions, such as the unification of security forces and constitutional reforms, have raised concerns among civil society and international observers.
President Kiir said his government is committed to working with regional and international partners to address the remaining challenges, assuring that peaceful elections and national reconciliation remain at the top of the agenda.
