(JUBA) – The Government of Central Equatoria State has announced that the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) have restored control over the towns of Libogo and Lasu in Yei River County after recent clashes with armed groups.
The announcement was made on Tuesday after the State Security Committee held its regular meeting in Juba. The meeting was chaired by Governor Rabi Mujung Emmanuel and reviewed security challenges in several counties, including Morobo, Kajo-Keji and Yei River.
Speaking to the press, Acting State Minister of Information and Communication, Jacob Aligo Lo-Lado, said that SSPDF troops responded quickly after attacks were carried out on 16 August by joint forces from the SPLM/A-IO and the National Salvation Front (NAS).
According to the Minister, the attacks targeted Lasu and Libogo in Yei River County. He explained that the government forces repelled the fighters and were now in control of both areas.
The Minister also raised concern about the worsening humanitarian conditions in Kangapo-2 and Liwolo Payams. He explained that an incursion last month by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) forced about 16,000 people to flee their homes.
The displaced families are now scattered across six locations in Yei River County.

Aligo described the situation as a serious humanitarian crisis, with urgent need for food, shelter and medical care.
He also drew attention to increased activities of armed groups in Morobo County, saying they continue to pose threats to civilians. In addition, he noted that Juba has been facing a rise in land grabbing and other crimes.
The State Government has directed all security organs to focus on protecting civilians and ensuring that law and order are maintained.
The Minister emphasised that the administration is determined to end insecurity and restore peace across Central Equatoria State.
