SMAC+ Project Launched in Yei to Transform Agriculture and Boost Local Economy

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – A major agricultural development initiative aimed at strengthening livelihoods and improving market systems has been launched in Yei River County.

The Sustainable Markets and Agribusiness Competitiveness Plus (SMAC+) Project was officially introduced last week, bringing renewed hope to smallholder farmers and agribusinesses across the county. The initiative is being spearheaded locally by the national non-governmental organization, Organization for Agricultural Opportunities (OFAO) South Sudan.

The rollout in Yei follows successful launches in Torit and Magwi Counties, forming part of a broader regional effort to improve economic opportunities and resilience in Eastern and Central Equatoria states.

Funded under the European Union’s Green and Resilient Economy Programme and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the four-year project is implemented by Caritas Switzerland as the lead partner. It will operate across several counties, including Yei, Juba, Terekeka, Torit and Magwi.

According to OFAO South Sudan, the SMAC+ Project is designed to increase productivity and incomes for farmers and agribusiness actors by improving access to markets, strengthening value chains and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

The initiative also prioritizes climate resilience, equipping communities with the knowledge and tools needed to adapt to environmental challenges while ensuring the sustainable management of natural resources.

In addition, the project will promote private sector engagement and inclusive peacebuilding, recognizing that economic development plays a vital role in fostering stability and social cohesion.

Local stakeholders have welcomed the launch, describing it as a timely intervention that will create opportunities for youth and women, revitalize agricultural production, and enhance food security in the region.

With agriculture remaining the backbone of livelihoods in Yei River County, the SMAC+ Project is expected to make a significant contribution towards economic growth, community resilience and long-term development.

The launch marks an important step in building a more competitive and sustainable agricultural sector in South Sudan.
