(UGANDA / SOUTH SUDAN ) – A two-year Sustainable Peace, Environment and Economic Development Project, known as SPEED, has been launched to support local communities in parts of South Sudan and Uganda.
The project is funded by the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) and is an extension of the PAMANA Project led by Caritas Switzerland in Uganda.
In South Sudan, the project is co-implemented by the Community Development Center (CDC) and Organic Farming Advisory Opportunities (OFAO).
Speaking to Access Radio via WhatsApp on Sunday, CDC Executive Director Sebit Martin said the joint initiative will benefit communities in Yei River County and Lainya County.
“The name of the project is Sustainable Peace, Environment and Economic Development, or SPEED. It is a triple-nexus project aimed at addressing issues related to food insecurity, conflicts over natural resource management, and humanitarian response.”
Sebit added that the consortium project will be implemented by three partner organizations in both countries.
“Specifically, we have three partners implementing this project. Caritas Switzerland is heading the project in both Uganda and South Sudan. In South Sudan, CDC will implement the peace-building and conflict management components. In Uganda, CDC will work in Yumbe and Koboko districts, while in South Sudan the project will be implemented in Yei and Lainya counties. The humanitarian component will be implemented by OFAO.”
The SPEED project aims to promote sustainable peace, improve environmental management, and strengthen economic development in communities affected by conflict and food insecurity.
