(TEREKEKA COUNTY) – Construction of a new water reservoir has begun in Reggo and Rijong payams of Terekeka County in Central Equatoria State, in a project aimed at reducing cattle related conflicts and improving access to clean water for local communities.
County authorities say the reservoir will help ease tensions linked to cattle migration by providing a reliable water source closer to grazing areas and settlements. The project is also expected to reduce the distance women travel each day to collect drinking water.
The initiative was launched on Wednesday in Terekeka during an event attended by local officials, state representatives and implementing partners.
Officials said the water facility is part of wider efforts to encourage stability and development in the county, where seasonal cattle movements have often led to disputes between communities.
During the launch, Central Equatoria State Minister of Peacebuilding Jacob Aligo delivered a message from the state governor, calling on communities to avoid internal conflicts and support development projects.
He welcomed the recent third edition of the Mundari Cultural Festival but expressed concern over clashes reported between the Yari and Koggi clans, urging local communities to maintain peace.
The Central Equatoria State Ministry of Agriculture also thanked implementing partners Point Investment and Salam Junub for supporting the reservoir construction. Authorities said the project will help improve water access for households in the area.
Terekeka County Commissioner Dr Emmanuel Loku Lodu said the project belongs to all communities in the county and called on residents to work together peacefully.
He thanked the Central Equatoria State government for its support, as well as the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Point Investment and Salam Junub for their involvement and for seeking additional funding.
The commissioner said Terekeka County remains open to further development support and appealed for the project to be expanded to Tali and Tindilo areas.
Representatives from Point Investment and Salam Junub also called on communities to cooperate with project workers and resolve any concerns through peaceful dialogue.
Local authorities said the water reservoir is expected to help reduce disputes over grazing land and strengthen cooperation between cattle keeping communities in the county.
