(JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN) – Egypt added to their FIFA ranking points after a commanding 5-0 victory over South Sudan in Juba, although the Pharaohs remain officially ranked 24th in the world ahead of the next FIFA rankings update.
The win on Tuesday, 29th September, gave Egypt their first victory of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign after they opened Group B with a goalless draw against Angola.
According to figures reported after the match, Egypt gained 2.6 ranking points from the victory over South Sudan, taking their total to 1,592.08 points. The result has not yet moved Egypt from 24th place in FIFA’s official standings.
FIFA’s official page lists Egypt in 24th position and says the next FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking will be published on 7th October. FIFA also notes that rankings calculated between official releases remain provisional until matches are approved as international “A” fixtures.
Egypt controlled their qualifier against South Sudan and opened the scoring through Mostafa Ziko in the 36th minute.
Omar Marmoush doubled the advantage four minutes after the restart before substitute Ibrahim Adel made it 3-0 in the 75th minute. Marmoush struck again in the 83rd minute, and Hamza Abdelkarim completed the 5-0 victory in stoppage time with his first goal for Egypt’s senior national team.
The result lifted Hossam Hassan’s side to four points from their opening two Group B matches. Egypt had been held 0-0 by Angola in Cairo in their first qualifier.
The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The top two teams in most qualifying groups will advance to the tournament.
Egypt’s next test will be an international friendly against South Africa at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday, 4th October.
The Egyptian Football Association confirmed that the match is scheduled for 9 p.m. Cairo time and forms part of the national team’s preparations for the remaining AFCON qualifiers.
The South Africa match could also affect Egypt’s ranking points before FIFA publishes its new official standings three days later.
Egypt entered the current international window ranked 24th after climbing five places in FIFA’s July ranking. Their final position in the October edition will depend on the results counted by FIFA during the international period.
