(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Residents of Yei Town are calling on the newly appointed Caretaker Commissioner of Yei River County to prioritize urban planning and reorganize the town to restore its image as one of South Sudan’s leading urban centers.
The residents say unplanned structures erected by traders on public roads sides and drainage channels are affecting movement, sanitation and the overall appearance of the town. They are urging local authorities to take action to improve infrastructure, open blocked roads and establish a more organized town layout.
Charles Tabule Cosmas, a resident of Yei, said the town’s once-clean and orderly image has gradually deteriorated and requires urgent intervention.
“If you come to the town square and the other streets in the town, some traders erected business structures, including blocking waterways. We want the town to look uniformly organised and clean like other towns in South Sudan,” he said.
Another resident, who identified himself only as Moses, called for the rehabilitation of business premises and improvements to the town’s road network.
“Most of the shops in the town need painting and renovation. The iron sheets need to be replaced, and we call on our new commissioner to talk to the traders to rehabilitate their shops. The government should also open and grade the roads in the town,” he said.
Local businesswoman Raida Betty echoed similar concerns, saying Yei has the potential to become one of the country’s most attractive towns if proper planning and maintenance measures are implemented.
“Yei is a big town in South Sudan but requires work to put it right. We call on our county government to help reorganise the town so it looks good and new,” she said.
The residents say improved drainage systems, cleaner roads, well-planned business areas and rehabilitated infrastructure would not only enhance the town’s appearance but also support economic growth and improve living conditions for the community.
