(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Residents of New Site and Lomuku One residential areas in Yei River County are calling on the county government to urgently repair the deteriorating Kanjoro Bridge before the onset of the heavy rainy season.
On Wednesday, 4 February 2026, representatives from Lomuku One and New Site met the Yei River County Commissioner, Emmanuel Taban Seme, to raise concerns over the poor condition of the bridge. They warned that the damaged structure is putting the lives of residents particularly school-going children at risk.
According to the delegation, the damaged bridge has already disrupted movement for many residents, cutting them off from essential services such as markets, hospitals, and schools located in the main town.
Community members said they are willing to contribute local resources including sand, stones, and bricks to support the rehabilitation of the bridge.
The delegation was led by their chairperson, Mr. Johnson Poru Hillary, who emphasized the urgency of the situation as the rainy season approaches. He noted that if the bridge is not repaired soon, flooding could once again disrupt transportation and isolate communities, similar to what occurred last year.
In response, Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme commended the residents for their proactive initiative and patriotism in mobilizing local resources to rehabilitate the bridge.
He described their efforts as a strong demonstration of responsible citizenship and community commitment to development.
The commissioner assured the delegation that the rehabilitation of the bridge is already included in the county’s development plan. He explained that construction work will begin immediately after the completion of the Wuluturu Culvert project, which is currently nearing completion.
However, he encouraged residents to continue mobilizing resources, emphasizing that collaboration between the government and the community helps accelerate service delivery.
Members of the delegation expressed gratitude to the commissioner for his leadership and timely assurance, saying the planned intervention will restore hope and improve accessibility for residents of Lomuku One, New Site, and neighboring areas.
Kanjoro Bridge is a strategic link in the area, as it connects the residence of the President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, at new site area to the main town of Yei.
