(YEI RIVER COUNTY) Authorities in Yei River County are set to officially launch the rehabilitation of the Lomuku one Kanjoro-Newsite Bridge on Thursday, in a move aimed at improving transportation, boosting local trade and enhancing access to key production areas.
The launch ceremony is being jointly organized by the Lomuku ONE Newsite Road community and the Yei River County local government, reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen community participation in development initiatives.
Speaking during a joint preparatory meeting held at the county headquarters on Monday, the County Commissioner urged the bridge rehabilitation committee and the Department of Physical Infrastructure, Roads and Bridges to make effective use of the available resources to ensure the project is successfully implemented.
He emphasized that infrastructure development remains a top priority for improving service delivery and stimulating economic activities across the county.
The Director of Physical Infrastructure, Roads and Bridges, Richard Lugala Godo, commended both the county leadership and the Lomuku community committee for their commitment and cooperation in preparing for the rehabilitation works ahead of Thursday’s official launch.
Emeritus Bishop Hillary Adeba also praised the collaboration between the local government and the community, describing the project as a significant step toward improving mobility and supporting development initiatives in the area.
He stressed that community participation remains vital in sustaining development efforts, especially amid the country’s ongoing economic challenges.
The Paramount Chief of Yei welcomed the joint commitment demonstrated by government and community leaders, saying the rehabilitation project symbolizes unity, cooperation and shared responsibility among the people of Yei River County.
He further noted that local leaders would mobilize residents across Yei to actively participate in the launch and support the rehabilitation process.
Johnson Poru, Chairperson of the Bridge Rehabilitation Committee, highlighted the project’s expected impact on local livelihoods.
“Once completed, this bridge will serve as an important access point to production areas, improve service delivery, revitalize local markets, and enhance the safety of community members,” Poru said.
“Together, we are building more than just a bridge — we are building a pathway to prosperity,” he added.
The rehabilitation of the Lomuku 1 Kanjoro Newsite Bridge is expected to ease transportation challenges, strengthen economic connectivity, and support both social and commercial activities throughout Yei River County.
