With profound appreciation and great anticipation, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to His Excellency Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony for his visionary decision to establish Yei University at the former United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) base in Yei. This landmark initiative represents a significant step toward decentralizing higher education and expanding long-overdue academic opportunities in our state.
For far too long, Yei and its surrounding communities have faced limited access to tertiary education. This gap has constrained the intellectual and professional growth of our youth. Since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), many young people have seen their aspirations hindered by the absence of institutions capable of nurturing their talents and broadening their horizons. In some cases, this lack of opportunity has led to negative alternatives, including early marriages and substance abuse.
The establishment of Yei University is not merely an educational initiative—it is a powerful symbol of hope, opportunity, and progress. It represents a new beginning, one that promises to equip our youth with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to become agents of positive change in their communities, our state, and the nation at large.
As a technocrat, public policy analyst, and educator, I wholeheartedly support this initiative and commit my voice, expertise, and energy to its success. The creation of Yei University underscores the transformative power of education and lays a strong foundation for sustainable peace, socio-economic development, and intellectual advancement.
Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony’s leadership and foresight in this matter deserve recognition and collective support. It is my hope that Yei University will grow into a center of academic excellence, shaping future generations and contributing meaningfully to the development of South Sudan.
