(NIMULE, MAGWI COUNTY, EASTERN EQUATORIA) – Local authorities in Nimule have pledged stronger action against rising gang activity following a meeting that brought together chiefs, community leaders, youth representatives and security officials.
The meeting, chaired by Mayor Caesar Longa Fuli, came after a fresh outbreak of incidents in August 2025 that raised fears of renewed gang violence in the border town.
Nimule has enjoyed relative calm in recent months following the upgrading of the municipality and the appointment of a mayor, but the latest events have increased pressure on the authorities to act.
Mayor Longa Fuli said the municipality would not tolerate further lawlessness and that decisive measures were necessary. His stance reflects a recent resolution passed by the Eastern Equatoria State revitalised transitional legislative assembly, which gave local authorities more powers to respond to insecurity.
Alongside security operations, the mayor has also been pushing for economic regulation by urging local businesses to register formally. His office says it believes this step will help close loopholes that criminal groups have exploited. The approach is aimed at combining security measures with economic reforms to address the wider conditions that may drive young people into crime.
The meeting also agreed on preventative steps through community engagement. Leaders proposed education sessions in villages and town centres to encourage young people to abandon gangs and instead take part in productive activities. Local leaders believe that addressing the social and economic roots of the problem is just as important as law enforcement.
One of the most controversial proposals discussed was the enforcement of a “shoot to kill” resolution against armed criminals. While some see this as a necessary deterrent, others worry it may raise concerns over human rights and accountability. Authorities say further discussions are needed to balance public safety with legal protections.
Officials emphasised that community cooperation will be central to efforts to reduce gang activity. They expressed hope that combining stronger policing with youth programmes will restore confidence and stability in Nimule.
