(Kajo-Keji) – At least three civilians were killed and one other injured following a deadly attack by unidentified armed men in Kajo-Keji County, Central Equatoria State. The incident took place on the evening of Friday, June 13, 2025, in Nyainga-Muda village, located in Bori Boma of Kangapo II Payam.
The information was confirmed in an official press statement issued by Kajo-Keji County Commissioner Wani Jackson Mule on Sunday, June 15.
He reported that the victims included 82 year old village headman Julius Like, medical worker Stanley Wani Philip, and 27 year old Simaya Lodu James. A fourth individual, 19 year old Tunda Bosco, sustained a gunshot wound to his left foot and is currently receiving treatment.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility. The assailants reportedly fled the scene after the incident.
Commissioner Wani strongly condemned the killings, calling them a tragic and unacceptable act of violence against innocent civilians. He announced that a joint security force comprising national and local law enforcement has been deployed to the area to restore security and protect residents.
“We are taking this incident seriously and have taken immediate steps to ensure the safety of civilians in the affected area,” said Commissioner Wani in his statement.
He also appealed to community members, including traditional leaders, religious figures, civil society organizations, women’s groups, youth, and political actors, to support local peace and reconciliation efforts. “Sustainable peace requires all of us to work together,” he said, urging citizens to remain united and committed to promoting harmony and development.
Kajo-Keji County, which borders neighboring Uganda to the south of Juba, has experienced repeated episodes of violence and instability, particularly since the outbreak of South Sudan’s civil conflict in 2016. The region has struggled to fully recover, with periodic incidents of armed violence threatening the fragile peace.
Local authorities have not yet confirmed whether any arrests have been made in connection with the June 13 attack. Investigations are ongoing, and officials say more updates will be shared as they become available.
Community leaders have expressed concern about the resurgence of violence and called on the government to increase its presence in remote areas where security is limited. Residents of Nyainga-Muda and surrounding villages have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with authorities during the investigation.
