(MOROBO COUNTY) – Authorities in Morobo County of Central Equatoria State have released two men who had spent several months in a military detention facility in the county, according to the county commissioner.
The Morobo County Commissioner, Data Charles Bullen, said the two men, identified as Eli Amule Cosmas and James Towongo, were released on Christmas Day without any charges being brought against them.
In a message addressed to communities in Morobo, Lainya, Yei and Kajokeji counties, Commissioner Data said the release was carried out through his office at the Morobo County headquarters on 25 December 2025. He described the decision as a positive step taken during the festive period.
The commissioner said the two men had been detained in Birigo following allegations related to the illegal possession of a machine gun. He explained that the case involved accusations made between members of the same family.
He said that after investigations and consultations with the South Sudan People Defence Forces, including communication with the brigade commander, no evidence was found to support the allegations. As a result, the authorities decided that there was no basis to continue holding the two men.
The commissioner said the detainees were formally handed over to his office and arrangements were being made to facilitate their return to their respective homes. He added that the two men were in good condition and were expected to travel back to their village in Birigo through the Ugandan Kaya border.
Commissioner Data also appealed to members of the public who know the two men to inform their relatives about the release. He specifically mentioned Kennedy Tereka in Nimule and Aru, Hilary Idi in Juba, and Betty Gamba in Juba, asking that they be notified.
Morobo County, a strategic area in Central Equatoria State, borders both Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The county has experienced recurring insecurity and displacement since the start of this year, affecting local communities and cross border movements.
