Mock Exam Setback Raises Alarm in Yei Schools

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Education authorities in Yei River County have raised concerns over a decline in learners’ performance in the 2026 primary school mock examinations, warning that urgent action is needed ahead of the national exams.

The mock examinations, intended to assess candidates’ readiness for the final Primary Leaving Examinations, revealed lower-than-expected results across schools in the county.

According to Philip Taban Isaac, the Yei River County Education Director, 1,904 candidates from 52 primary schools and seven Alternative Intermediate Programme (AIP) centres sat for the examinations.

The results show that 1,166 candidates passed while 838 did not meet the required standard. Among the 889 girls who sat the exams, 473 passed and 416 were unsuccessful. Of the 1,015 boys, 593 passed while 422 did not pass.

Despite the disappointing outcome, Philip Taban Isaac said the mock examinations should serve as a wake-up call rather than a source of discouragement.

He urged teachers to use the results to identify weak subject areas and provide targeted support to learners during the remaining three months before the final examinations.

The county education director also called on candidates to focus on disciplined study habits, use their textbooks effectively, and avoid relying on examination malpractice.

Education officials say schools now have a limited window to strengthen learners’ preparation and reverse the declining trend before the national examinations begin.

For many schools in Yei River County, the mock results are not just a measure of performance, but an early warning that more effort is needed to improve learning outcomes and boost success rates in the final exams.
