(JUBA) – The United Kingdom has announced a new aid package worth $139 million, equivalent to about 637.4 billion South Sudanese Pounds, to support South Sudan’s humanitarian needs, education and health services.
The announcement was made during a reception held in Juba to recognise South Sudanese alumni of UK universities.
British Ambassador to South Sudan, David Ashley, praised the graduates for their achievements and encouraged them to use their education to bring positive change in their home country.
He said the UK values its partnership with South Sudan and is committed to helping the country achieve lasting development and stability.
Speaking at the event, South Sudan’s Minister of General Education and Instruction, Hon. Kuyok Abol Kuyok, also urged the graduates to contribute to nation building.
He said that education is one of the key tools needed to rebuild the country and called on the alumni to take active roles in their communities, schools, workplaces and institutions.
The UK’s new aid is expected to support basic services across the country, focusing on vulnerable communities. According to officials, the funding will be directed towards humanitarian assistance, improving access to health services and strengthening the education sector, which continues to face challenges related to infrastructure, resources and teacher training.
Ambassador Ashley said that the UK’s investment in education is not only about academic qualifications but also about developing leadership and strengthening the relationship between the UK and South Sudan.
