(Aweil) – Three new boreholes have been completed in Danyang, Kot Akec and War-Akiir by the ASK Foundation, delivering clean and safe water to communities that have long struggled with waterborne diseases, including cholera.
The project marks major progress in efforts to improve public health and reduce the risk of future disease outbreaks in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.
According to the ASK Foundation, the boreholes are part of a wider plan to construct four new water points across vulnerable areas. So far, three have been completed, with the final one nearing completion.
These new sources of clean water are expected to reduce reliance on contaminated surface water and unsafe wells that have contributed to repeated cholera outbreaks in the past.
For years, residents of Danyang, Kot Akec and War-Akiir have faced difficulties in accessing safe drinking water, often walking long distances to fetch water from potentially unsafe sources.
With the completion of these boreholes, many families now have access to water within a short walking distance from their homes.
Health workers in the area have praised the development, noting that improved access to clean water is a major step forward in preventing diseases such as cholera, typhoid and diarrhoea, which remain common in areas with poor water infrastructure.
Community leaders have expressed gratitude to the ASK Foundation for its commitment and timely intervention. Many said the project brings better health and renewed hope for the future.
Some residents described the availability of clean water as “life changing,” particularly for women and children who often carry the burden of collecting water.
ASK Foundation, a non-governmental organisation focused on health and development, has called for continued support from donors and partners to complete the remaining borehole and maintain the existing ones.
The organisation said it remains committed to supporting marginalised communities across South Sudan.
