(Juba) – A South Sudanese journalist working with an international media outlet was seriously injured in a violent attack by suspected gang members in Gumbo-Sherikat, a suburb of Juba.
The crime has raised new concerns about the safety of journalists and the growing insecurity in the area.
The victim identified as Deng Manchol was returning home when he was assaulted by a group of individuals armed with pangas (machetes). During the attack, he sustained a deep wound to the head.
Witnesses and close sources said that the journalist was quickly rushed to a nearby clinic for urgent medical attention. His condition remains stable, though he is reported to be in pain.
The assailants are said to have stolen Mr. Manchol’s personal belongings, including his mobile phone and other electronic equipment used for his journalism work.
The attackers reportedly fled the scene immediately after the assault, and no arrests have been made at the time of reporting.
Residents of Gumbo-Sherikat have expressed alarm over the increasing incidents of gang violence in the area. Many fear that the lack of regular police patrols and poor street lighting has created an unsafe environment, especially during night time hours.
The attack on Mr. Manchol has further heightened these concerns, particularly for those in the media who may be targeted for their work.
Local authorities have not yet issued an official statement.
